The “Little Stars” (Las Estrellitas) is an effort to prepare children for the 1st grade. The Little Stars arose out of conversations with teachers at the local elementary school, who reported that the entering first graders could not begin the standard curriculum until the seventh month of the school term because they lacked foundation skills and were unprepared to learn. The Little Stars are entering first grade with the ability to read, write and perform arithmetic operations at a second grade level. There is a classroom at the Casa Bugambilia center, but often parents are afraid to let their children leave home because of the narco-violence. On those days, the teachers make home visits to keep the children learning. In collaboration with valued partners, a start has been made on building classrooms in Ciudad Juarez, too.
